How to Hand Express Breastmilk
Hand expression can be a gentle and effective way to remove milk, especially in the early days or when you’re building supply.
1️⃣ Get comfortable.
Find a quiet space where you can relax. Wash your hands and have a clean container or spoon ready to collect milk. A warm compress or gentle breast strokes beforehand can help with letdown.
2️⃣ Make a “C-hold.”
Place your thumb above and fingers below the areola, forming a “C” shape.
3️⃣ Push in toward your chest wall.
Gently move your thumb and fingers back toward your body—not out toward the nipple. Keep that “C” shape—avoid sliding or stretching the skin.
4️⃣ Compress.
Press your fingers together in a smooth, gentle rhythm to express milk from the ducts beneath the areola.
5️⃣ Release and repeat.
Relax your hand, then repeat the motion: press in, compress, release. Rotate around the breast to reach all areas.
6️⃣ Switch sides as needed.
Alternate breasts until milk flow slows or you feel more comfortable.
Tip: Hand expression shouldn’t hurt. If it does, adjust your pressure or hand placement. Over time, you’ll find your rhythm and what feels best for your body.💛
